Omiwatari (お神渡り, or “gods’ crossing”) is the name given to the ice patterns that form across the frozen surface of Lake Suwa in winter. The patterns are caused by the water circulation triggered by a natural hot spring at the bottom of the lake. According to myth, the patterns are formed when the god Takeminakata-no-Mikoto walks across the frozen lake to meet the goddess Yasakatome-no-Mikoto.

Toho fans are no doubt familiar with the names Suwa and Yasaka.

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Back in the day, when this blog was known as “Heart’s Content”, I announced a prize of “I’ll draw whatever you want (within reasonable limits)” for whoever posted the 666th comment to the blog. The winner was Kairu Ishimaru. His comment?

epic lulz! lolis!

That was a good comment for such a milestone, if you consider that comedy and lolis are the foundation of this blog. That’s why J.C.Staff is the best anime studio on earth, why Kito is better than John Avon, and why Toho is the best game series around. For his prize, he requested a catgirl with glasses, and this was the result.

This illustration spent a while as the banner of his blog, then I adopted it as my own banner after he stopped using it.

And then my blog got hacked.

Heart’s Content was reborn as the more appropriately named “Heart’s Content (H.C.) Staff”, but the posts were all lost and the comment counter was reset to zero.

The Comment #666 award was replaced with a Comment #999 award, and I never announced it, because announcing the award made people comment more and I wanted it to be a surprise.

Reader Falkonus made the 999th comment:

lol at cirno’s face.

Fairy Ring (Take 2)

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

In both art school and normal school, in drawing and writing, I have been told, “Never submit the first draft”. And when it comes to drawing, what I post is usually not the first thing I came up with.

This is the most obvious example, but even with stuff like Lotus Cobra is Evil, layouts and writing undergo many changes before the final product goes out. The latest comic with Jace being a jerk was the third idea I came up with, having scrapped both a sequel to the “All Your Jace” comic and a graveyard joke guest-starring Orin, and the line insulting Suika was originally “Looks like you just searched out two Marsh Flats”, far inferior to the end result.

Fairy Ring used the first draft of a script. I don’t know what possessed me to do that. It was probably because Miao Diary used the first draft and came out okay – until the last chapter, which I stalled on for a long time before finally figuring out how to end it properly. After drawing 26 pages into the story, I’ve realized the problems with the script, and have resolved to fix them.

Brute force

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

As promised, here’s me brute-forcing my way past Satori.

Too lazy to memorize the blind spots in that last fairy’s attack? Bomb it. (The fairy drops 1.00 power worth of items anyway.) Dying twice to Double Death Butterfly? Bomb it. (Satori drops 1.00 power worth of items anyway.)

Besides that, I’m glad Terrible Souvenir and Satori’s nonspells are trivial. I’m going to need all the lives I can get for the catgirl from hell.

Fairy Ring (3-4/20)

Holy crap, that took forever! It’s like waiting for “Gensokyo Tag Tournament” to update on danbooru!

This far into the comic, I’m starting to realize a major issue: It’s taking forever for stuff to happen. I wanted Cirno and Suwako to run into each other, have a good time, and not realize who the other was. The way I chose to set things up was that the Moriya Shrine had just appeared in Gensokyo, and so the goddesses were out scouting the potential worshippers: Suwako and Sanae in “disguise”, and Kanako more directly. But as it turns out, that setup requires a lot of time.

Giant Swing (Improved)

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

While I am still struggling (and failing) to pass Satori on Normal, my performance on Stage 3 has improved.

Compare it to my last upload of this stage. That’s the difference of running practice mode 200 times!

Also, Frein was right about focusing more on Yugi’s first nonspell. It makes it easier to stay on target and allows me to clear that nonspell in much less time and with much less danger. I still find it easier to be unfocused during some attack patterns though, particularly “Feat of Strength – Storm on Oeyama” and the nonspell that follows it.

“Feat of Strength – Storm on Oeyama” – the one with the purple bubbles descending diagonally from upper right to lower left – gives me headaches. As you can see, my capture rate is only about 25%, compared to my about 50% on the other cards (and the near 100% on the trivial card, “Hell’s Wheel of Pain”). Memorization, which is my strongest asset in games like these, seems to be useless against it.

If I perfect stages 1-3, I think I will eventually have enough lives to brute force my way past Satori and then figure out the finesse way in practice mode.

To Muffin:

Make you happy?

If you ask me, her abilities are 1) accumulating spore counters and 2) putting 1/1 green Saproling creature tokens onto the battlefield.

Fairy Ring – Preview Page 4

Chapter 1 is 25/36 pages complete. Progress has been slow.

I don’t even know now when this will be done. All I can promise is that I will continue to work on it.
