Use Your Illusion (COMPLETE)

“Love didn’t just happen to us. We built it slowly over the years, stone by stone, for you, for your brothers and sisters, for all of us. It’s not as exciting as secret passion in the woods, but it is stronger. It lasts longer.”

– Lady Stark, Game of Thrones season 2, ep. 10

Use Your Illusion 1

Sunday, October 20th, 2013

I used to work a part-time job along with a lady who was a foreigner like myself. Also like myself, this lady was an art school graduate who intended to become a permanent resident and citizen of the United States.

Some foreigners in my art school class had the skills to obtain visas to work as professional artists in the United States. My art skills were not (and are still not) at that level, and so I had to use my web programming and database skills to get a job as a Systems Analyst and earn my visa.

The lady from my part-time job had no job skills that were in high enough demand, and her art skills were on a lower level than mine. So what did she do? She married a man who was an American citizen, stayed with him for a few years until she obtained a permanent resident visa, then divorced him and moved to the east coast.

Afterward, I spoke to the man she had left behind. “She got what she wanted and left,” he said. “All I can do is be happy for her.”

There was some love between the two, but not enough that they would want to have children, and not enough to keep them together through the disagreements that arose after the lady had obtained her visa.

The religious person I used to be would say that in the absence of crimes, abuse, or infidelity, people who are married should make every effort to stay together, because the bond of marriage comes from the gods and should be stronger than earthly differences. The person I am now knows that people don’t necessarily see it that way.

The gods of this world, if they exist, tend to remain quiet when people get married for the wrong reasons.

The gods of Gensokyo are not nearly as quiet.

Those of you who know where the title comes from might have guessed that this is Part 1 of 2. And you would be right. Part 2 will appear at the end of January 2014.

Use Your Illusion – Pages 03-04

A long time ago, I had the following conversation with my brother:

Me: My boss is a jackass. I want to quit my job.

Brother: Your job pays extremely well and quitting would make you lose your worker’s visa. Don’t be such a drama queen.

Me: Don’t you need a worker’s visa too? Why don’t you apply for a job at my company?

Brother: I guess I can do that.

(One interview later…)

Brother: Your boss is a jackass. Quit your job.

To tell the truth, my boss at the time was not really a jackass. He worked himself as hard as he worked any of us and donated a lot of money to advance education in poor countries. But that didn’t mean he wasn’t a nightmare to work for. He just didn’t understand the point of view of someone who used the job to pay the bills and needed free time to do what they really wanted to do. It never occurred to him that working Saturdays and Sundays for a month would not go over well with people who didn’t love their job as much as he did.

I quit that job.

You may notice that the font has reverted to the Autumn Children font and the screentone has disappeared. This is because I plan to execute everything in plain black and white first, then work with my publisher on the typesetting and screentone. (Those of you who bought the paper version of Autumn Children have seen that the font and screentone are different from the ones on this site – thanks to my publisher who replaced them herself.) I will be able to proceed from now on at the rate of two pages a week, like with Autumn Children.

Did you know that part of the reason why I vastly prefer Youmu x Reisen over such other pairings as Youmu x Yuyuko or Tewi x Reisen is because their character designs are aesthetically similar to Haruka and Sora from Yosuga no Sora (which I said has influenced me in the past)?

And remember what Sora’s accessory is: a stuffed rabbit.

Of course.

As for Use Your Illusion, the templates being used by DoujinPress are now double the resolution (and thus 4x the surface area) of the ones I used for Autumn Children. Right now it’s taking longer to draw each page, but I expect the momentum to build.

I only got one page done this week. Sorry.

Jemil’s Big Easy

Fairy Ring takes place around Fairy Lake, Montana.

Autumn Children takes place in Derrymore Woods, County Armagh, Northern Ireland.

Use Your Illusion takes place in downtown Seattle, where Youmu is an assistant cook at Misty’s Big Easy and Reisen works at the pharmacy at Harborview Medical Center.

So Leo Modesto, the Youmu x Reisen champion of the west, has put out a book and you should buy one. I did – even if I’m also getting an autographed copy directly from the artist.

Leo has also been prodding me to get started on you know what.

So let’s do this.

My new fanbook, Use Your Illusion, starts next week.

Full size

Hopefully, this works out better than the last time I tried this pairing (which ended with me throwing out the script and rolling the dice on Autumn Children). And unlike my previous doujins hopefully the romance stays in the script until the final draft.

It is a rule on pixiv that all Youmu x Reisen pairings have to be moderated by Sanae, and the goddess of miracles does play a major role in the script, though not in the way you would think. I borrow a lot of ideas from the trailblazing works of Soichiro Hoshino (aka Souin Kuhou), although I have toned down the fanservice.

Any resemblance to the Guns N’ Roses two-part album Use Your Illusion are completely coincidental.
