So Samukun has sent me a copy of Subterranean Animism, the hardest game in the Toho series, directly from Japan. While waiting for it to arrive, I got the demo from Moetron and tried it out.

Yeah, it seems like the rumors of ZUN’s mercy running out in this game are true. Everything seems a stage harder than Mountain of Faith. And the game system is less forgiving as well.

Extends (items that increase your life total) have been replaced with extend pieces, where you have to collect a number of them to gain a life. And where in previous games extends were always dropped during lulls so you could easily collect them, extend pieces can be dropped in the middle of a firefight, and not taking damage takes priority over obtaining the pieces.

In Mountain of Faith, as you collected power-up items, your attack power reached max at level 4 but you could collect up to 5, which was useful because you had to sacrifice a power level in order to bomb. Power items were plentiful in Mountain of Faith, giving you lots of incentive to bomb early and often. However, in Subterranean Animism, power items are harder to come by and you don’t get the extra fifth level of power, so bombing hurts your attack power immediately and it’s hard to get it back.

However, it seems like they gave Reimu a break by giving her GAP HAX, which is the ability to teleport from one side of the screen to the other. It makes life much easier. This video is posted for the benefit of Samukun, who says he is having trouble with Parsee.

While it certainly is possible to clear this stage without GAP HAX, why make things hard on yourself?

Goddess of Envy: 0

Also, this famous video makes so much more sense now:

Do I think I can beat the final stage? Probably not. If the other two Toho games I’ve cleared are any indication, Stage 2 is supposed to be trivially simple. But Parsee was a struggle already until I discovered how to use GAP HAX, which means I’ll have problems when it comes to legitimately dodging stuff in the later stages.

But we’ll see how far I can go.

I wasn’t planning on it, but it’s back. For how long, I don’t know. School started again this week and I have homework, but today’s spoilers have been too momentous to ignore.

DesuDesu (NSFW) and MTG Color Pie are of course granted permission to use any strips in this series on their sites.

I’m sick of this “loli” business

I think I’ll focus on sparkly bishonen characters now.

I mean, J.C.Staff is doing it, so why not me?
