Year of the Snake

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

Has it actually been a whole year?

It has indeed. A full year has passed since the first Lotus Cobra is Evil strip made its appearance. And since then, to my surprise, it has gone on to be my most popular work, despite its extremely narrow focus. Lotus Cobra posts are more read and commented than all except the CCY posts, and even on Pixiv where Toho is king, Lotus Cobra is more bookmarked and more highly rated than my best Toho pieces.

I guess the overlap between planeswalkers and weeaboos is bigger than I thought, and the online Magic the Gathering community is just that awesome.

Thanks to promotions from Evan Erwin and Bennie Smith of Star City Games, the extra exposure from MTG Color Pie and MTG Salvation, mentions on blogs such as Rattie’s and DesuDesu’s, and last but definitely not least a feature on the Official Magic site, Lotus Cobra has been brought to more people than I could have expected. Thank you to everyone who reads Lotus Cobra is Evil.

This is the last weekend of summer. School, which starts again on Wednesday, will destroy my free time again, and it may take a while before the next Cobra post, or the next anything post for that matter. I know the jokes are inconsistent and the art is still not at a professional level. But Lotus Cobra is Evil wouldn’t be the most popular thing I’ve ever done if there wasn’t something in it that people liked. So I will continue to do my best to bring that “something”.

Anyway, here’s a double feature!

Less than nine lives

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Normally, I wait to upload videos of myself playing Toho until I have played the stage enough times that I can pass it without continuing, and without bombing too many times or taking too much damage.

But this time, I was so proud of finally passing Orin on Normal that I couldn’t wait. For someone like me who sucks so much at Toho, passing this is proof that anyone can do it if they just try enough times. Yes, this includes you, Muffin!

All the horror stories you’ve heard about the catgirl from hell are true, by the way. I was an inch from death the whole time.

In other news, HimeyaShop got Fairy Wars in stock, and of course I ordered my copy faster than you can say “9!”

Fairy Ring (Take 2) – Pages 13-16

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

I actually have many things to draw and even more things to post about, but I’ve been extremely busy at work and have fallen sick over the weekend. I haven’t forgotten the Comment #999 award, but I haven’t started on it either. My first day of school is September 29, and if things don’t lighten up at work we could be looking at a long suspension.

Nevertheless, here is more Fairy Ring.

Gods’ Crossing is actually one of Kanako’s spellcards from the extra stage of Mountain of Faith (she is Yasakatome-no-Mikoto after all) but here Suwako gets to use it too. Of course, this being a Cirno x Suwako fanbook, all notions of sticking to canon went out the window a long time ago.

Taking it easy again

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

I worked too much this past week and developed eyestrain. I’m taking a break from drawing for a while. Expect Fairy Ring next week as normal.

So I went to the local game store and talked to the Dungeon Master who I hadn’t seen in a while. I had thought I would be able to play some Dark Sun this summer, but I turned out to be too busy. Turns out a new wave of changes are coming to the 4th edition rules, and I for one approve.

I can’t wait for the Character Builder to incorporate these changes, allowing for Dwarves with strength bonuses, powered-up Fireballs and Burning Hands, more effective Great Fortitude/Lightning Reflexes/Iron Will, and the new Human racial power Heroic Effort.

Sticking foot in mouth

Can someone fluent in Japanese please help me read:

Rattie’s first post on Lotus Cobra is Evil
Rattie’s reaction to “Ask Dr. Koth”

I fear I have horribly misread something, and made a fool of myself to a great degree. Such is the challenge the language barrier poses to diplomatic relations.

Expect a post following, asking how to properly apologize if I have offended him.

Edit: Thanks to DesuDesu, I was able to clear this up.

Ask Dr. Koth

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

So Lotus Cobra is Evil got featured on the Japanese blog of Rattie, who said (as far as I can tell) “Nissa and the Cobra are very cute… the true moe character is Sorin.”

Sorin!?

No, I am not going to turn Sorin into Remilia. I’m not some perverted lolicon Tohofag who insists on moefying everything.
