Suddenly, an obstacle

Now that I’m on spring break, I put some time into trying to finally finish Mountain of Faith. Since I could sometimes clear Stage 4 without taking damage, and I could sometimes clear Stage 5 without taking damage, I figured all I had to do was get a good run where I clear both those stages with little or no damage, and have enough life to just bomb my way through the sixth and final stage.

I got that good run before too long, and got to Kanako, the Stage 6 boss, with 6 extra life.

I then proceeded to bomb my way through Kanako’s attacks one at a time. Miracle of Otensui was as difficult as advertised, but it folded to Hax Sign: Bomb Everything.

When I got to Kanako’s final spellcard, the titular “Mountain of Faith”, I discovered a number of distressing things.

First, once the card activated, my bombs were… suppressed. They didn’t even wipe the incoming bullets from a quarter of the screen.

Second, it seemed like when I bombed, Kanako became immune to damage for the duration of the bomb, taking no damage from the bomb itself or the bullets I hit her with during that time.

Third, once I had knocked out about half of Kanako’s lifebar, everything… sped up.

Needless to say, I died horribly.

It seems that Frein’s comment on an earlier post was true: Most of Mountain of Faith is not all that hard. It’s Kanako that’s hard.

Well, it seems like there’s no easy path to victory for me. I’m going to have to learn to beat that last spellcard the hard way. I still do think I have what it takes, but it’s going to be a struggle.

P.S. After I died, I dialed the difficulty down to Easy Mode for “revenge”. As you would expect, I took no damage until I reached Kanako, and I kicked her ass on the first try without having to use a continue. However, a no-continue clear on Easy Mode is not really something to be proud of…

Well, beating her on easy is a step forward, I think, as I don’t feel like her spell cards change as much as those of other bosses when going up in difficulty levels.

Late comment, but here’s a fun fact: in my replay of MoF Hard, I made it up to Kanako’s last spellcard with three-ish lives and literally stood in front of her the entire time. I bombed and bombed until I won.

Also, I know you already beat it, but I’m not sure if her invincibility has anything to do with bombing. I think she just “fades” in and out, because I had to permanently bomb so as to avoid dying, and I still did damage to her.
