The return of Angel Beats

So the five survivors of the first round of the Star City Games Talent Search in the Mixed Media category have been announced.

[Podcast] Deep Analysis
[Video] Very Poor Magic
[Art] Alterations
[Video] Magic Talk
[Comic] Angel Beats

Guess I wasn’t disqualified!

Yeah, that’s some pretty tough competition right there. The guy who painted over Masticore obviously has serious art skills, and covers a topic that is popular on forums but has never been featured on an article site. Very Poor Magic is not exactly poor, and has a great sense of humor similar to Evan Erwin’s Magic Show.

So now I’m expecting an email with details for my assignment for the next round. Got to get my homework out of the way quickly then. As for the comic, here it is.

Excellent comic, looking forward to seeing you on scg when you clean up the competition. I wonder how many of the judges got the title? <3 Angel Beats

  3. Kenny Wong says:

Wow. Nice work. Good luck next round!

  4. anon says:

The last one has the best punchline.

    I mean, seriously.

  5. aaa says:

I just recently found this blog and its wonderful magic related comics. I wish you’ll win.

I’ll feel bad for anyone of the five who won’t win, though. You all have pretty good material.

  6. GoldenSunfreak says:

Good luck, Sixten. You really shouldn’t say that you aren’t talented, cause those comics are pure comic gold. I’ve seen many fan comics, and almost all of them weren’t as good as yours. There are few talented artists out there, and you are definitely one of them. Ganbatte!

  7. Khรดi says:

Poor little Serra. She will be always in my heart!

  8. Zizhou says:

    Cuu~~uuute

Poor Serra Angel. I still use my battered copies from fourth grade over any of that mythic nonsense…

And nice attention to detail with the asymmetric sleeve on Serra’s dress, too.

  9. JS says:

Superb moefication! Don’t really get the second one though.

  10. MH says:

Yay! I didn’t really like the middle one, but the last one is comedy gold.

Making (web)comics is a lot harder when you’re actually on a deadline and not doing it “when you feel like it”, so I’m hoping you’ll benefit a lot from editorial help ๐Ÿ˜‰

LKiE is one of my favourite comics and I would LOVE to see you be able to do it for a living.

  11. Impulsive says:

Well done. You made a great slew of comics this go around.

Honestly, you have improved over the year. Your jokes have indeed gotten slightly better while sticking to the subtle taste, and your art style is what attracts the audiance because it’s something not found anywhere else in the Magic fandom. (I still remember reading webcomics for Magic and how much their art was questionable.)

There is still room for improvement though, specifically with jokes. Though I do agree with your post on the SCG forums that making such humor is indeed a hard task, so I’ll give you credit for making some great ones the past few comics (then again, some people wouldn’t get the Touhou references. I did, and I thought they were fitting.)

But yes, that’s enough of the lengthy review. Good work Sixten for making it past the first round! Hopefully people will start to see your work more.

  12. Skribulous says:

Good work. We’ll be rooting for you.

  13. ToastCrust says:

Honestly, I don’t play magic, but I’m with a lot of people who do.

I usually find your stuff pretty funny lol

    Hope you keep progressing.

  14. Foamy says:

Wow, Serra Angel sure is vigilant.

    (Hur hur, funny joke!)

  15. riptide director says:

Good work were looking forward to see your work on the next round!!

  16. Mokuzai says:

    Hey, Sixten
I’ve been reading Lotus Cobra ever since I found it in the Color pie column. I am an avid fan of your work and really look forward to reading it whenever it comes out and I check back often.
Seeing a Great artist and comic writer seem down on himself makes me want to stand up and show my support, keep doing whatever it is you do. I’ll keep reading and showing it off to all my magic buds!
