Ravnica: Izzet and Selesnya

The first two redesigns for the Ravnica: City of Guilds project are the Izzet and Selesnya characters.

Izzet
The Brilliance of Fire and Ice

The undisputed masters of spellcraft and invention on Ravnica, the Izzet were rabid inventors, fusing elemental magics with technology to power their creations. Led by the capricious and unfathomably brilliant dragon Niv-Mizzet, the Izzet magewrights endlessly created and destroyed, driven only by rabid passion for discovery.

Gabriel, Izzet Chronarch
The male lead of our story, Gabriel is one of a few Izzet wizards who have learned the art of combining red and blue magic in such a way as to exert a small amount of control on time itself. This is a highly precise science requiring a deep knowledge of both sorcery and alchemy. Science is all about being able to demonstrate and recreate phenomena, and thus many Izzet fire, ice, and time spells are self-replicating as long as they have a supply of mana. Gabriel’s last resort is to invoke the Firemind, calling upon the power of the dragon Niv-Mizzet to refresh spellcasting power or incinerate opponents.

Selesnya
The Beauty of Light and Seed

“Once you are with us, you are an equal among us. Until then, you are lost,” said the wolfrider evangel Tolsimir, an agent of the Selesnya Conclave. The Conclave thought itself a selfless, nurturing, spiritual congregation, but others regarded it as a brainwashing nature cult.

Claire, Selesnya Evangel
The female lead of our story, Claire combines the magic of faith and nature to summon many creatures to her service. She is almost never seen without her overweight Bird of Paradise familiar. Her creatures can then combine their powers to cast cooperative magic effects, banishing enemies in a flash of light or summoning even mightier creatures. Claire’s most powerful technique is the Glare of Subdual, in which she and her minions channel the light of Vitu-Ghazi, the City Tree, to blind and paralyze her opponents.

  1. Samu-kun says:

I commend you for resisting the urge to add neko ears to any character who’s name ends in “nya.” =w=

  2. Sixten says:

Like I told Tidal, before the un-moefication of the Ravnica project, Selesnya-chan (aka “Selesnyan”) was a 15-year old catgirl maid. It even worked with the Magic game, because the majority of Cat type creatures in the game are green and/or white, which are Selesnya’s colors.

  3. The card says she’s an elf. *glances at her ears*

  4. Sixten says:

Not giving her elf ears like Savra was a conscious decision, in the same way that the Aethermage has a blindfold and wings. You must not know as much about this project as I thought you did.

  5. I’m not a Magic:TG person, is all.

  6. Sixten says:

It has nothing to do with Magic; in the TCG, Selesnya elves do in fact have traditional elf ears. I just thought that since that you had been contacted by the person who was in charge of this project, that he would have told you about its true nature.

  7. Oh. Well, as of now you can consider me informed then.

  8. Tibor says:

I’m just a passerby, but does it make sense that an Izzet Chronarch would be so young?

I also noticed that many Izzet have less then regular names. Juzba, Zok, Zataz, Trivaz, they all are much different from the common Gabriel. If he were to represent the Izzet, shouldn’t his name have more… zaz? Gizax, perhaps?

  9. Jacob Martin says:

    Hey Sixten,

To be honest I just found out about your blog, but the lure of moe Magic cards and redesigned avatars of bloggers I occasionally Gmail-chat with for the CCY project drew me in.

I’m much more terrible at art than I am at writing, or writing about art. I also play Magic:tG with my old schoolchum but his Thorn Elemental beats me every time.

Nice to see some retro Ravnica love, I have nearly constructed an 80 card Ravnica Dimir Guild deck, but I need about two more boosters to try and even it out.
