Yumekui Merry will be legendary

I am here to silence all the fools who aren’t looking forward to the Winter 2011 anime season. My silencing tool of choice, of course, is Yumekui Merry.

What is Yumekui Merry all about? Let’s ask Bakayarou, the fan translators of the manga.

So yeah. There’s a Crimson World-like threat from the denizens of the dream world who try to invade our world by possessing the bodies of humans. Standing in their way is our Shana-like super-powered tsundere loli, Merry Nightmare, as the female lead. Assisting her is Yumeji Fujiwara, a boy with mysterious power and a Yuji-like hair antenna.

Merry is a denizen of the dream world who has somehow become stuck in the human world, and she wants to defeat the invading denizens and force them to take her home. Yumeji’s power is to sense and enter the dreams of others by looking into a circle made by his thumb and forefinger. He can sense when a person is being targeted by the dream denizens. After Merry saves Yumeji from a chainsaw-wielding cat known as Chaser who has invaded his dream, Yumeji decides to repay Merry by helping her find the invader who can take her back home.

Yumeji seems to have some added power when he’s in his dream or in someone else’s. It’s minor right now, but he has greater endurance and reflexes than in the real world, thanks to his constantly being chased by cats and emulating his favorite Power Rangers-like show. But just like Shakugan no Shana’s Yuji became quite powerful over the course of his two seasons, I would bet that Yumeji’s power will become great eventually.

After they work together to defeat a dream denizen who was trying to possess a lonely girl named Minato, Yumeji gives Merry her title of “Yumekui”, or “Dream Eater” – and I had flashbacks to when Yuji named Shana after her sword. I must admit, when I first read about Merry, I first thought about Mary from Tsukiyo no Fromage, who also eats dreams. But no, she’s totally Shana. Just replace the melon bread with doughnuts.

What does all this similarity to Shana achieve? It gets an anime adaptation by J.C.Staff, that’s what. There’s no better studio to take on the epic story of a tsundere loli and her boy pet as they fight the forces of evil. A J.C.Staff tsundere show is already one of the better shows of any given season, but Yumekui Merry is even more awesome than that.

How so, you may ask. Well, Yumekui Merry is written and illustrated by Yoshitaka Ushiki. Yes, that Yoshitaka Ushiki of One Night Stand, the creator of one of the most famous Toho doujins of all time.

As you can imagine, Yoshitaka Ushiki is a massive Toho fan, and a small bit of Toho influence has crept into Yumekui Merry. For example, Merry’s outfit has rampant ribbons, and Merry herself, like a Toho heroine, is useless without her frilly Scarlet Sisters hat.

Yumekui Merry’s OP and ED are powered by IOSYS, the music circle that brought us all those wonderful remixes of Toho music.

A fantasy action show can be pretty good as it is. But a Toho-flavored J.C.Staff fantasy action tsundere loli show with cats? Now that’s going to be legendary.

    One word: approval.
    This is will epic. (Hopefully)

  2. GoldenSunfreak says:

And all it needs is for Merry to have a catch phrase like Shana’s “Urusai Urusai Urusai!”

  3. Samukun says:

So… is this also running on a Dengeki magazine?

  4. […] must be their anime debut. (Talking about Touhou circles making anime debuts, did you know that IOSYS will be doing the OP/ED (near the end of the post) for next season’s Yumekui Merry? Why, you ask? (Chances are) because the mangaka for Yumekui […]

@Samukun: This comic runs in Manga Time Kirara Forward, which is not affiliated with Dengeki as far as I know.

  6. Frein says:

Well, it seems like your run of the mill shounen nonsense, but I may be wrong. Let’s just hope they don’t cast KugiRie as Merry.

  7. Sixten says:

You say that like it’s a bad thing. There’s no such thing as too many Rie Kugimiya tsundere characters. Anyway, Ayane Sakura has been cast as Merry, so you can rest easy, I guess.

  8. Frein says:

Oh I’ve definitely experienced at least one KugiRie tsundere loli clone too much. It got incredibly old about the third time, which was probably the terribly mediocre Zero no Tsukaima.

  9. ExoByte says:

Apparently you’re the only one talking about the OP so far. In fact, google Yumekui Merry OP and feel lucky.

    *inception sound*

4 Character songs. All composed by IOSYS.
